John Watson and Co spends £3m on new Gallus press

Independent label and commercial printer John Watson and Co has secured £3m of funding to spend on a new Gallus press.

The Glasgow firm has bought a Gallus RCS 330 machine and the money was secured from the Clydesdale Bank. The 10-colour press will help meet increased demand in the drinks sector for self adhesive labels for whisky and spirits.

“These are challenging times in print manufacturing and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the Clydesdale Bank in this exciting and ambitious project,” said the company’s chairman John Watson.

The press has five litho units, three flexo units, one screen units and a hot foil stamping unit. The RCS 330 has been installed and became fully operational this month.

According to the firm, John Watson and Co has a turnover of £10m and has a workforce of 80. It prints around 20m labels each week supplying brands including Pernod Ricard, Whyte and Mackay, William Grants and Morrison Bowmore.

Last October, the company confirmed it would spend the £3m on a new machine and took delivery of it in December last year.
