Tzaw Bao proudly reports their original Taiwanese machines are still in use after 26 years.

“Machines are like our children; they go out in the world, but we’ll always look after them.”

Tzao Bao’s dedication to ongoing maintenance satisfies new and existing customers alike.

At the age of 14, Li Feng Sheng started work as an apprentice in Hyi Maw Industrial, a long standing company in the packaging industry. Whilst working there, Li realised that the packaging machines all shared the same flaw - they were heavy, bulky and difficult to move, unsuitable for businesses with limited space and the need to often reconfigure production lines. Upon further investigation, Li found that no-one produced such flexible machines, and set forth with the idea of developing a small auto-packaging system.

Li Feng Sheng is now the General Manager of Tzaw Bao, a company he founded in 1988. Li takes great pride in the company’s Taiwanese heritage, ongoing innovation and originality, and the company’s unique model of customer support. The story of how Li established Tzaw Bao is an inspirational one, reflective of the surprisingly personal nature of the company.

Li began his apprenticeship with Hyi Maw in 1980, directly after graduating from middle school. He recalls that once, while still a student, he had a part-time job packing ice cream into tubs with a wooden paddle - it is perhaps this experience which led to a lifetime fascination with packaging automation.

Despite joining as an apprentice, Li quickly advanced in his career. In 1985, he developed the first generation MODEL-602 panel; the following year, he collaborated on the creation of the first generation of double wired tea packaging machines.

During his time at Hyi Maw Industrial, Li found himself focussing on the need for lighter, more portable packing machines. He also recognised a growing demand for a standardised specification for Taiwanese packaging machines. It was these two customer needs which led him to establish his own company,Xin Bao Liang Xing Ye Hang , in 1988.

Li recalls that, at the time, many people questioned whether a need genuinely existed for such machines, even doubting the potential lifespan of a smaller packaging device.

Despite these concerns, Li was able to build a culture of Taiwanese-led innovation, producing a number of important systems. These included a second-generation powder granule packing machine; a liquid packaging machine; a high-concentration sauce packaging machine; and the successor to his previous design of tea double packaging machine.

The success of these designs led to growing demand, and, in 1991, Li met this by establishing Tai Ke Qi Xing Ye Hang. During this period of rapid growth, Li identified a third customer need which he felt the packaging industry must meet - the need for ‘minimal-maintenance’, automated packaging systems.

Li incorporated the three aims - less bulky; standardised; and minimal-maintenance - into his development of a third generation tea double packaging machine. This product led to rapid business growth and a surge of demand from export markets. In response, Li rebranded the company ‘Tzaw Bao’ in 1993, fully aligning the company’s ethos to the needs he had identified.

What does ‘minimal-maintenance’ mean?

It is simple to comprehend how systems can be made smaller and more standardised. But what does ‘minimal-maintenance’ mean? Tzaw Bao sees ‘minimal-maintenance’ as an ideal to be pursued. For instance, Li recognised that traditional large-scale packaging machines rely on belt driven motion. Naturally, over time, belts become prone to elastic fatigue which leads to machine failure. In their pursuit of ‘minimal-maintenance’ designs, Tzaw Bao developed the ‘full gear drive’ system. This improved electronic control of the packaging machine, reduced air pressure within the mechanisms, and avoided the fatigue problems which previously led to belt failure.

Bespoke solutions with agile support

One consequence of pursuing ‘minimal-maintenance’ is the need to consider each customer’s needs as a unique problem to be solved. Processes vary between each business. In recognition of this, Tzaw Bao manages a portfolio of solutions for each customer.

The portfolio includes full details of the customer specific requirements, full specifications of the bespoke systems developed, and service histories for each component of the systems. These portfolios, which have been in use since 1996, enable Tzaw Bao to proactively manage each customer’s system, responding rapidly and expertly to any change in requirements.

It is illustrative of this approach that some of Tzaw Bao’s first systems - installed in 1991, before the company even adopted the name - are still in use 26 years later. General Manager Li has stated that his greatest sense of achievement comes from supplying machines which will meet customer’s needs as long as required.

In 2003, Tzaw Bao extended the portfolio system with a novel approach to maintenance. Advancing further in their quest for ‘minimal-maintenance’, Tzaw Bao instigated a ‘home for maintenance’ service. This sees Tzaw Bao periodically taking apart whole machines from customers’ premises, and cleaning, repairing and updating components piece by piece in Tzaw Bao’s workshops. This approach reduces the need for ad hoc repairs of products and increases the dependability of Tzai Bao machines as a whole.

Co
untdown to 30

In four year’s time, Tzaw Bao will turn 30 years old. As Li Feng Sheng looks towards this milestone, what plans does he have for Tzaw Bao? Extending the ‘home for maintenance’ service will be one key aim. This service, together with Tzaw Bao’s use of only the best quality components, will most readily demonstrate the reliability of Tzaw Bao products over those of competitors.

Beyond this, one may say it is ‘business as usual’ for Tzao Bao, in that they will continue to strive to be a leading example of Taiwanese innovation and design. Li Feng Sheng’s guiding principles will continue to be a goal and inspiration throughout this. As he observes, “We need to care about our machines as much as our customers do. It’s not enough to deal with our products on an intellectual level, when customers feel more strongly than that. There is a lot of heart put into businesses; we will put just as much into our manufacturing plant.”
