For the sake of environmental protection, the UK government is going to launch a food system and a packaging facility that will develop products "more sustainable socially, economically and environmentally." In that way, more waste prevention and recycling could be carried out.
The UK was found to waste about 4.1m tones of food per day in a Cabinet Office report. The report released the strategy in an attempt to promote more packaging reduction and recycling which could be cooperated with the food chain so that the practice could be more thorough and effective. Of course, England must forerun ahead.
Also, some information chains from manufacturers through retailers, consumers and local authorities to reprocessors will be improved.
According to Jane Bickerstaffe, director from Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (Incpen), "People need to be encouraged to buy food in packaging that suits their lifestyle as food waste is ten times worse than bulky packaging.
Consumers are called on to be smart enough to choose appropriate packaging for real needs. It is suggested that jarred food or ready meals that could be frozen and edible at a later date will be the best choice.
