According to Carbon Reduction Commitment(CRC), companies that have the electricity bills in excess of £500,000 will be required to pay £12 for each tonne of emitted carbon dioxide from 2010.
From the perspective of Packaging Federation chief Dick Searle, this is a project that claims companies’ cash will take into consideration of the firms’ ‘past performance’ so that discrimination will not be accidentally cast on the industry.
Firms that participate in other carbon trading schemes will get exemption from the project. And qualification for the project will be based on the ‘performance’ in 2008.
However, some criticism came from Searle. The scheme undoubtedly flings pressure on businesses instead of benefiting them. Searle pointed out that manufacturers have been working out to diminish energy consumption for years.
The CRC is to be practiced through the Climate Change Bill, which is going through Parliament.
