Creative and Amusing Way to Combat "Excess packaging" in Scotland
2008-12-01
With the concern of excessive packaging, Friends of the Earth Scotland assembled volunteers to dress up as giants with pieces of fruits and vegetables while they return those excessive packaging to the local supermarkets.
Campaigners “mobilize” a number of costumes standing for packaged produce. One man wore a large cut-out yellow pepper, while a mother dressed up a giant onion was also accompanied by her daughter, who was covered as a tomato.
According to the environmental pressure group, excessive packaging accounted for by £470 per year among average household bills. Rosiaina Browning from Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: "A large proportion of packaging is unnecessary and much of it could be avoided if supermarkets sourced more produce from local suppliers."
However, the completely opposite view came from Richard Dodd of the Scottish Retail Consortium. Packaging is used to protect foods from deterioration and keep foods in sound condition, so packaging is actually not producing the waste.
