Waitrose set to ban disposable coffee cups from its stores
2018-04-16

From: FoodBev Media

UK supermarket Waitrose will remove all takeaway disposable coffee cups from its stores by Autumn 2018 as part of its strategy to reduce its environmental impact.

Waitrose will initially remove all disposable cups from nine of its UK branches on 30 April, and will then gradually phase out the cups from all of its UK stores.

Customers who possess a myWaitrose card – a loyalty card which entitles customers to a free coffee when shopping at Waitrose stores – will be encouraged to bring disposable cups to receive their free drink.

The company claims the move will save more than 52 million cups annually, drastically reducing the supermarket’s environmental impact.

Tor Harris, Waitrose’s head of sustainability and responsible sourcing said: “We realise this is a major change, but we believe removing all takeaway disposable cups is the right thing to do for our business and are confident the majority of customers will support the environmental benefits.

“It underlines our commitment to plastic and packaging reduction and our aim is to deliver this as quickly as possible.”

This new initiative is the latest sustainability pledge made by the company, as earlier this year the supermarket pledged to eliminate black plastic packaging from its own label products by the end of 2019.
