East Hampton Village could be the next Long Island municipality to ban plastic foam containers.

Village officials said that they have been considering making it illegal for restaurants to use plastic foam cups and containers. They contacted Patchogue officials last week to request a copy of the village’s legislation banning the containers. The law was adopted in January and takes effect in September.

“I anticipate that we will take up the issue at our March 1 work session,” said East Hampton Village Administrator Becky Hansen.

Dozens of cities nationwide have adopted such bans, and Dunkin’ Donuts last week announced plans to do away with plastic foam cups in its shops worldwide.

Patchogue, Southampton and East Hampton towns have also adopted plastic bag bans in recent years.

Patchogue Village Trustee Joseph Keyes spearheaded the municipality’s ban on foam containers and wants it to spread across the island.

“We want other villages to put up the banner and run with it,” Keyes said last week. “I’m happy to hear there is interest in it. I hope they follow through.”

Bellport Village Mayor Ray Fell has said he intends to bring up possible legislation to his board soon.
