A revision on food labeling in FSA
2008-12-01
With the concern that existing labels are too small to see clearly, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has taken to revise guidance on labeling for food packaging.
The revision is to adopt black type against white background and manufacturers should type at least 8 point font size for basic user-security information. Also, use of an open font, a matt finish and an increased painting area will be altered.
‘The main purpose of this alternation is to provide consumers with more clear labeling so that nutrition labeling or product information on the merchandise could be legible enough,’ said Stephen Pugh, head of the Food Labeling Branch at the Food Standards Agency.
A research conducted by insurance firm Standard Life Healthcare revealed one-third consumers overlooked labeling information on the produce. The survey said that 36% of male buyers and 22% of females did not care about the amount of overall nutrients or ingredients contained in the food.
Standard Life Heathcare suggested consumers emphasizes more on information that was "typically of interest to their generation".
