PET beats Bag-in-Box and can as preferred alternative to glass wine bottle
Wines packaged in 75cl PET bottles are most likely to be accepted by UK consumers as an alternative to glass, according to research published consultancy Wine Intelligence.
Evidence from the Wine Intelligence UK Packaging report shows that the lightweight PET bottle has edged in front of the Bag-in-Box (BIB) package in terms of popularity among the UK’s 28 million regular wine drinkers.
In a survey of those who drink wine at least once a month, 40% said they would be likely to buy wine in a PET bottle in future, compared with 37% for BIB, 21% for a pouch, 14% for Tetrapak and 7% in a can.
A spokesperson from Wine Intelligence said: “This confirms that consumers still overwhelmingly back the 75cl glass bottle for almost all wine drinking occasions, particularly in social settings.
“Alternative packaging has more relevance in outdoor settings, or when carrying heavier glass bottles are inconvenient.”
Richard Halstead, chief operating officer of Wine Intelligence, added: “Consumers remain wedded to the glass bottle because it fulfils all their emotional notions of what wine represents, which easily overcome any functional disadvantages such as weight or breakability.
The report also explores consumer perceptions of wine labels and back labels, and sets out a new style classification system for labels, along with a list of “dos and don’ts” for back label copy.
