Energy drink sales growth boosts can consumption

The UK market for beverage cans increased by 7.4% in the first half of 2010 on the back of increased energy drinks sales and alcohol promotions, according to sector body Can Makers.

Can Makers said that 4.6bn cans were shipped in the UK in the six months to June, some 315m cans more than the same period last year.

Can Makers said that the UK remained the largest market for beverage cans in Europe

Chairman Vince Major said: "The rise in the soft drinks market is primarily due to the growth of energy drinks in the UK and continuing promotions by megabrands. Consumers are choosing these over the more costly juices, smoothies and bottled water alternatives.

"The alcohol sector has been benefited from the support of supermarket promotions, the continuing trend to drink at home and, of course, the World Cup."
