Industry Overview
The packaging industry in Japan constituted around $52.89 billion annually. Japan is the second largest producer of packaging equipment, followed by the United States. The production value of packaging machinery in the developed countries is approximately $18 billion annually, of which Japan accounts for about 18 percent.

Plastic packaging imports raise its shares in the Japanese market. The total imports are projected at approximately 60,000 tons to 120,000 tons. Some experts estimated that more than half the market share of pallet stretch films was imports. This decline in the use of domestic pallet stretch films is attributable to higher labor and real estate costs and unfavorable taxation rates.

Meanwhile, imported packing and binding products are also greatly increasing. The import share is projected at around 20 percent of the total packing and binding market. Price is the greatest competitive factor in this industry. Recent trends suggest that the number of imported packing and binding products is rapidly increasing.

The Law for Promotion of Sorted Collection and Recycling of Containers and Packaging required the recycling of glass bottles and PET bottles. The law extended recycling requirements to cover cardboard/molded pulp, paper and plastic containers and packaging to be recycled into marketable products. In order to cope with increasing waste, the Japanese packaging industry has shifted the direction of the industry into the downsizing and recycling of packaging. New business opportunities have arisen for new packaging technology in terms of the development of materials and recycling, hygiene, safety, and selection.
