Industry Overview
The packaging industry in Taiwan is mainly driven by the food and beverage sectors. This has resulted in increasing demand for packaging machinery. The packaging market reached a total industrial output of $300-450 million annually. The total packaging industry in Taiwan is comprised of some 300 small and medium-sized companies. The food and packaging machinery industry both reach a half market share for import and export. The food industry replies more on Taiwan’s domestic demand, whereas the packaging machinery industry accounts for more exports to the international markets. Generally speaking, the food and packaging machinery industry are growing because of overseas investments, especially in China.

Hong Kong and China are the largest market export for the food and packaging machinery industries. Export to Thailand, according to industry sources, accounts for approximately 10%, ranked the second export market. The other major export partners to Taiwan’s market include Vietnam, the US, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. In total, Taiwan’s market demand for food and packaging machinery export is mainly from Asian countries, which account for 60%.

Japan is a major importer for the food and packaging machinery industry in Taiwan for many years, followed by the US and Germany. The two countries have brought about a tremendous market demand for the food and packaging machinery industries, which have grown by 10% in recent years. Other importers of Taiwan’s market are Singapore, Italy and the Netherlands. Overall food packaging import market is dominated by Japan, Europe and the US, account for 75% of market demand. That is because local end-users demand for automatic, high-speed, and sophisticated packaging machinery with special functions to ensure quality and reduce costs.

Taiwan is one of the packaging machinery export countries for the international market. In 2005, Taiwan’s packaging machinery exports reached an output of $2.02 million, grew by 11%, compared to the last year. Major exporters of packaging machinery are Hong Kong and China, account for 26.5%. The US and Thailand also cater to the demand of the industry. Other export partners are Japan, the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea. This represents that packaging machinery export are dominated by the Asian countries, account for a 60% share.

Imported packaging machinery is of a higher quality and technology level. Machines that are flexible and capable of handling a variety of packaging materials are in good demand. Major import sources are Japan, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the US.
