Industry Overview
The market for the packaging industry in the UK has grown steadily over the past years, accounting now for around 1% of the UK’s GDP. The growth in the packaging industry is mainly driven by the food and beverage sectors, increasing by 4% to £5911.5 million in 2005. The beverage packaging sector has generally proven to be more robust than the food packaging sector in recent years. Packaging machinery market declined by 6% in value terms to £375.7 million in 2005. Total packaging machinery exports stood at around £37 million, whilst total imports of packaging machinery into the UK were almost three times higher at £96 million.

Plastic is the second most important packaging material in the UK, after paper and board. Plastic has the most dynamic growth of the packaging materials sectors in the UK. Flexible plastic forms around 30% of all plastic packaging sales by value in the UK. The total market sale of packaging was worth £956 million in 2005. The increase in price of the raw materials used in the production of plastic packaging resulted in a greater rise in the value of the UK plastic packaging industry’s output.
