Brazil, Russia, India and China are to drive major growth in the corrugated market in the next five years as demand in developed nations slows, a new report from Pira has predicted.
The study said that board consumption would rise from 77m tonnes in 2009 to 78m in 2010, boosted by growing demand for convenience food and the development of on-line shopping.
By 2015, consumption will rise 27% from 2009 levels to 98 million tonnes, an average annual increase of 4.7%, with much of the growth coming from developing markets.
The environment is set to continue to be an important trend in the form of new coatings and lightweighting which will reduce volumes, the study said.
Pira's head of editorial Adam Page said that board consumption in developed markets would decline slightly in the short term.
"At the same time we believe that the BRIC countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – and Poland offer the most compelling growth prospects in the five years to come," he said.
More than 60% of corrugated board use is in non-foods with the largest sector being electrical goods. Processed food accounts for a quarter of total usage.
